Ford Excursion – Suspension Refresh – Wheel Bearings

Wheel bearings are a normal wear and tear item that can break down rapidly when towing heavy loads. While running through the suspension on our 19 year old Ford Excursion I started with replacing the front stabilizer and 4wd locking hubs so that I could drive with confidence towing our Rockwood Roo.

After replacing the front hubs on the Excursion, I noticed a grinding and dragging sound coming from the front wheels. After some forum research I decided the front bearings had to be replaced. On these model the whole hub and bearing assembly is replaced and the aftermarket options most will point you to are Timken and Moog. In my case, I picked up the Moog bearing assemblies and reserved some time in my father in laws heated garage to tear into the front end.

To say this job was a challenge is a gross understatement. Impossible? No. Frustratingly time consuming? 100%

In order to do this job I recommend a good torch, breaker bar, torque wrench,  and case of light beer. The heat and breaker bar will be essential to removing bolts that have been seized after 20 years of corrosion and road grime and the torque wrench will ensure your wheel does not fall off when rolling back down the road.

Several videos exist that can assist you in performing the job step by step, so I will focus on the results.

One word. Smooth.

If I had to choose a second, it would be tighter. As soon as I went for a test drive after replacing the bearing and hub assembly on each side I noticed and instant difference. The front end whirring and occasional grinding disappeared and the steering wheel wandered just a bit less which would translate into more confidence towing down the road. As an added bonus, New ABS sensors integrated into the assembly would help eliminate the constant shining ABS light that is common on these rigs.
