Andersen Level Review

Andersen levels were one of the very first purchases we made after our inaugural outing in our Rockwood Roo. If you have paid attention at campgrounds you no doubt have seen numerous leveling methods ranging from old fashioned wood planks to plastic lego style leveling devices. While I do not believe a silver bullet method exists for leveling your rig, I can confidently say these are close.

These levels work simply enough. When you park your rig, determine the low side of your axle and place the large curved plastic piece beneath your tires. You will then drive from low side to high, raising your rig to a level status in the process. I found this to be super straight forward and after watching the video at the bottom of this post, achieved a perfectly level setup on our first outing.

All that being said, they are not perfect. On our rig they can be a tight fit to get between our tandem wheels. While I could cut a bit of the lip off the levels to ease setup, I have chosen to keep them as is. This requires a bit of elbow grease to kick the “in between” level beneath the tire. They also can fight back on slippery surfaces and spit out when attempting to drive over. We’ve roughed ours up quite a bit after a summer of heavy usage and the slip issue seemed to take care of itself.

A warning when using any leveling device is to not get cocky. After dozens of setups my wife and I got sloppy and I nearly broke her forearm as she was pulling the “in between” level from beneath the tire while the vehicle was gently rolling off. A silly mistake by the both of us that is easy to make when trying to pull out at dawn on a long travel day.

Pros:
  • Seemingly indestructible build quality
  • Easy to use
  • Will level your rig up to 4 inches
Cons:
  • Can be slippery on surfaces when new
  • May require modification to fit between some tandem axle trailers
Tips:
  • Take your time
  • Be sure to account for your vehicles natural roll when you shift to park as it will lower your rig a smidge
  • Do not throw away your wooden plank as it can help on soft surfaces or sites with a greater than 4 inch slope

You can find these levels on Amazon as well as other fine retailers.
